Bridge Engineering Projects

Consulting Structural Engineers

NAL has offices in New Zealand and Malaysia from where we service clients’ engineering projects in New Zealand, Malaysia, Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, America Samoa, Bahrain, and Cambodia. Our consulting engineers work with clients on geotechnical, civil and structural engineering projects, including residential, commercial bridge design and construction supervision.

Our structural engineering consultants get called upon to analyse and design the construction and maintenance of structures that reinforce or counteract loads, such dams and bridges.

Fiji Road Authorities,
Low Level Crossings

Scope

Structural

Description

Our scope of works included structural, geotechnical, and Revit modelling of several low-level crossings in Fiji Islands.  We worked on locations such as Emuri, Pai Pai, Namata, and Nausori, where our team of structural engineering consultants carried out complete inspections from soil conditions to precast panel pour to site construction.

With our Revit models, contractors are better able to view what the crossings should look like during construction. In addition, we can minimise any material wastage by linking our details to the model.

The team worked tirelessly to calculate for a variety of eventualities, including heavy vehicle loading, load combinations, and simulated flood condition loading, such as water and even trees hitting the crossings in flood events.

Churtons Road RP 127 Bridge No. C13,
Kaingaroa,
Far North District Council,
New Zealand

Scope

Structural

Description

NAL Civil & Structural Engineers Limited were engaged by the Far North District Council (FNDC) to conduct a detailed engineering design for the renewal of 127 bridge in Kaingaroa.

As the lead design consultant in this project, NAL was responsible for the structural analysis and detailed design of the bridge abutment structure. To ensure the full scope of the project was thoroughly understood, site visits were made by our design team. The final design package of this bridge was submitted to the client for review before the construction phase began. Further site visits were then carried out by our Principal Geotechnical Engineer and Senior Structural Engineer during construction to monitor the setting of abutment piles.

NAL was involved in the $300,000.00 project from the outset and successfully delivered the design documentation for tender on time and came in under budget.

Matawherohia Road Bridge No. 148,
Far North District Council,
New Zealand

Scope

Structural

Description

As one of the Far North District Council’s preferred structural engineering consultants, NAL Civil & Structural Engineers Limited was involved in this $200,000 project right from the beginning.

NAL’s responsibilities in the project were to design the abutment precast capping structure that connects the existing abutment structure to the new precast deck structure. Intrusive investigation was carried out by NAL to ascertain the reinforcement arrangements in the existing abutment structure.

Through our efficient, professional service, NAL was able to add significant value to Council assets. We successfully delivered the design documentation for tender on time and came in under budget.

Agasi’i Stream,
Fagasa Village,
Island Of Tutuila,
American Samoa

Scope

Structural

Description

NAL Civil & Structural Engineers were engaged by McConnell Dowell (American Samoa) Limited to provide structural design services for Agasi’i Road Bridge and temporary pedestrian footbridge. The scope of work consisted of two phases:
(1) Conduct a visual structural assessment of the exiting abutments and determine whether the abutments were suitable or whether new abutments should be installed to support new bridge superstructure, and
(2) Structural detailed design of Agasi’i road bridge and temporary pedestrian footbridge.

Due to the poor condition of the main concrete deck of the bridge, NAL conducted a structural analysis and provided a detailed design of a new single span bridge across the Agasi’i Stream in accordance with AASHTO LFRD Bridge Design Specifications. The new road bridge structure was designed to be constructed of precast reinforced concrete units and the temporary pedestrian footbridge was constructed of steel beams and timber plank / steel plate decking.

NAL’s structural engineering consultants were able to co-ordinate with the contractor throughout the design process to provide any modification of the design calculations or drawings to suit the local construction practices.

Auckland Council,
New Zealand

Scope

Structural

Description

As one of Auckland Council’s preferred consultants, NAL Civil & Structural Engineers Limited has been engaged to provide engineering services such as visual structural assessments, the drawing up of structural remedial (strengthening) designs and writing of structural assessment reports on the many existing timber pedestrian footbridge structures managed by the Auckland City Council.

The scope of one of the projects involved the renewal of timber balustrades that had been compromised due to a flood event. Another project involved the structural analysis of an existing timber pedestrian footbridge structure and the structural design and capacity check of an existing bridge beam.

All structural analyses were carried out to the current New Zealand loadings code requirements and Standards New Zealand handbook SNZ HB 8630:2004 – Tracks and Outdoor Visitor Structures.
